The project team has developed a small-scale, modular solar thermal electricity generation unit, based on high concentration Fresnel lenses.
Technology / Innovation Summary
A novel design for a simple optical power enhancement system for solar panels based on Fresnel lens thermal electricity generation has been used. A total of five Fresnel lenses are used. Four folding mirrors at 45° to the vertical bend light parallel to the horizontal direction. The five incident light beams, from horizontal and vertical directions, perpendicular to the plane of respective Fresnel lenses, are focused onto a thermal receiver and heat exchanger system.

The global concentrated photovoltaic market is witnessing a strong growth due to the awareness of renewable energy resources in Asia-Pacific the Middle East and Africa, Europe, and Americas. The increase in the importance of renewable energy resources and high efficiency output, with low cost, in the market stream is one of the key drivers of this market.
The concentrated photovoltaic market is projected to grow from an estimated USD 789.1 million in 2014 to USD 1,514.4 million by 2019 at a CAGR of 13.9% from 2014 to 2019. The concentrated photovoltaic market in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.3% between 2014 and 2019. HCPV dominated the concentrated photovoltaic market and accounted for almost 93.4% share of the total market in 2013
Based on the global concentrated photovoltaic market estimated at USD 789.1 million in 2014 and assuming a 30% market share for Asia Pacific from the global market (based on market cues) gives us a regional market of USD 237 million. Assuming the Malaysian market to be 10% of the regional market gives us a target market size of RM 83 million.
The key advantage of the technology lies in its ability to harvest sunlight, and controllably vary optical concentrations to provide flexibility in the electrical output. It has been designed, developed and tested extensively for Malaysian conditions thus ensuring operational efficiency and cost effectiveness.
